Payments UK is the ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) recognised National Numbering Authority and the UK’s ISO sponsoring body for Issuer Identification Numbers (IINs). (We are also responsible for overseas countries that don’t have their own sponsoring authority.)

Used by financial institutions, merchandising and petroleum companies, Issuer Identification Numbers (IINs), identify card issuers and tell acquirers and card issuers how to route a transaction. The purpose of the IIN is to identify the card issuer and tell the acquirer and card issuer who to route the transaction to.

An international IIN is the first six digits of an account number on a plastic card used internationally or inter-industry.

Meanwhile, a National IIN is the first 8 digits of the account number, starting with “9826” and can only be used in the UK.

Look a little more closely for the Primary Account Number (PAN) – it’s found on the front of a plastic card with a maximum of 19 digits, and containing three different elements:

  Issuer
Identification Number
Account Check
  Number Digit
International PANs 6 digits

Variable up to 12 digits (1) Last digit
UK International PANs 6 digits
