Cash is an important part of the UK’s payments landscape, with around £250 billion spent in cash each year.

Payments UK is a sponsor of the Code of Conduct for the Authentication of Machine-Dispensed Banknotes, which plays a vital role in preserving public confidence in the authenticity of the banknotes they acquire.

A public consultation was held in 2016 to extend the scope of the Code of Conduct to include Scottish and Northern Ireland banknotes. A summary of the key themes raised by respondents during the consultation can be found here.

Following the consultation, version 3.0 of the Code of Conduct for the Authentication of Machine-Dispensed Banknotes was published in March 2017.
